Meet the Team: Q&A with Brian Philpott, Project Manager

Project Manager at The O’Dell Group

Walk us through a typical day in the field.

A typical day starts at the office. We meet to address the various needs and priorities of the day, and to catch up on progress. Most of the morning is spent making rounds to the different job-sites. There are a lot of moving parts, so I try make sure that the guys have both the materials and information they need to deliver the goods.

Scheduling meetings with contractors, ordering/tracking materials and tending to the general order of things is a constant. I often spend a fair amount of time with clients, keeping them updated and addressing whatever immediate concerns they might have. The job is a bit of a juggling act, and an exercise in problem solving. I enjoy that.

What's the coolest project you're working on right now?

I’d have to say 53 Cedar Hills in Weston. It’s an addition/remodel with cool unique spaces and classic charm. I appreciate that the design compliments the historical qualities of the house.

Best part about being part of The ODG team?

It’s a great group of people, with exceptional skills. It’s a team atmosphere that I’m proud to be a part of.

How did you find yourself in the world of tile artistry in California?

I started working with tile in Long Beach, CA around 1996. It was a summer job that I took after college, though I never imagined it would end up being my profession for so many years. The guy that I worked for was a Master at the old ways of the trade. I enjoyed the process and the sense of pride when the projects were complete. I learned that I enjoyed making things and working with my hands. I think my attention to detail and my patience allowed me to be my best. I believe craftsmanship, in its highest form, is art.

Do you have a mentor or role model in the industry?

Bob the Builder

What's the furthest or favorite city outside of Connecticut you've ever traveled to?

Tokyo, Japan.

What is the most memorable ODG project you've completed and why?

10 Timber Lane, Westport. One of my first “O’Dell Group” jobs in my current role. The details and design were elevated and the results rewarding. A really nice project, a really cool house and an awesome family. It was fun to deliver.

Pick one: Written calendar or online calendar? Tell us how you stay organized.

Online Calendar. Too much going on to rely on anything else these days.

Favorite motivational quote?

No words ever spoken motivate me more than hearing my kids call me Dad.
