During a Connecticut storm, this Weston, Connecticut home was struck by something heavier than lightning: a 100+ year old oak tree. The fallen oak tree did significant damage to the gable end knocking a hole right through the roof and ceiling. Luckily, no one was injured and the client was quickly referred to us by a friend. We got a call from the client and we were able to step in that same week to repair the damages as well as, get dreaming up additional renovations with architect Mary O’Dell and designer Brooke Crew of Brooke Crew Interiors.

COMMUNICATION IS KEY:

The O’Dell Group got started accessing the damage and discussing opportunities to rebuild with the client.

Interview with The Homeowner

We asked our client what it was like to rebuild and work with The O’Dell Group. Her responses (and “before and after” photos) give perspective on this ultimate “comfort in chaos” story.

Q: What was your biggest takeaway from the tree damage experience?

Anything can happen! We purchased our home in 2014 and worked with an arborist to remove many, many trees. We thought we had cleared mostly everything close to the house but a 100+ year old oak has other plans! The other takeaway is that the experience underscored the importance of having everything “buttoned up” in terms of insurance and resources. Getting in touch with our insurance and having access to our contractor and arborist helped us in the emergency situation.

Q: Did you have one or more inspirations while renovating with our team?

We really wanted the renovation and addition to feel natural. We didn’t want it to look so much like an addition and Mary O’Dell championed that during the whole process. We wanted the home to look like our home but majorly refreshed. We love our land and our neighborhood and wanted our house to feel more updated. We took advantage of the fact that we were suddenly in a renovation phase and really got into the project! We were also introduced to a brilliant interior designer named Brooke Crew. Brooke worked with us on everything from paint color selection, to fixtures, to tile, to floor stain, to rugs and furniture. Overall, we felt extremely lucky and well-supported when making decisions.

Q: Why did you choose The O'Dell Group?

We had previously met Chris through a dear friend who happened to be a client of The O’Dell Group. We had always admired the work that the O’Dell Group did for our friend as well as what we heard about their working relationship. When the tree fell, Chris was our first call. It still makes me tear up to think about but Chris and his team dropped everything that morning. All of the sudden, the house was full of team members from The O’Dell Group, building temporary ceilings and helping us unload the contents of our attic. Chris and Mary value family above all and they really felt for us being in our home with our children. They made every effort to make our family, and especially our kids, feel safe in a time of chaos. Chris talks a lot about “structural integrity” and it was a given that we would work with The O’Dell Group.

Q: Having a tree fall on your home is anything but relaxing! Walk us through the stages of your project and what made the process better for you and your family along the way.

It was a strange situation because we didn’t proactively decide to do a renovation and addition. We reactively decided to renovate after the tree fell onto the house. Fortunately, we found a rental home 10 minutes away. We began by sharing our “wishlist” for the home and discussing how our family operates in the home. Before we knew it, we were approving plans and making design selections. It was fun to pop in regularly to see the progress and to get to know the whole team. COVID hit in the middle of the project, which was unsettling for everyone but the team was able to continue with minimal delays. Chris and his team were extremely patient and understanding, as we added a lot along the way!
