This client had a guest cottage that was built in the early 1900’s and situated over the setbacks. Because of this, we were not allowed to change the exterior structure of the home in any way.

The cottage was sitting on an old rock wall, and required a new foundation. However, we couldn’t knock down or move the existing structure.

In order to pour a new foundation and footing, we had to temporarily shore up the structure while we dug underneath it. In order to accomplish that, we held the exterior structure in place with some wooden framing.

In addition to the complexities of pouring a new foundation under an existing structure, we also had to get approvals for a variance so that we could renovate it. The cottage no longer fit within the zoning guidelines, but architect Mary O’Dell came up with a design that the client loved and the town approved of.

The final result was a sleek, modern farmhouse cottage.
